although I was overly simplistic, in reality it's not that simple. there is for starters imo a significant chance that the external pressure from russia (and other enemies of the west) may cause the west to shatter rather than band together. The biggest issue we have imo is that we had it so stupidly good after the cold war until recently that we've been burying our heads in the sand and desperately trying to pretend we can go back to the way things were. Ukraine was a momentary, powerful wakeup call, but I see the west slipping back into lethargy as the stalemate in ukraine becomes a "new normal". this risks us being complacent and ultimately not able to respond and arm up fast enough. trump seems to be doing a good job, despite his infinite retardation, of helping europe get spooked into rearming though so far. I just hope our weak and cowardly leaders either wise up or switch out for better ones soon, although I highly doubt this will happen without a straightup war in europe. there's also a non negligible risk of significant, ethnicity-related civil disorder (unlikely to be full blown civil wars but still significant, something like the troubles) and infrastructure disruption in many western european cities in the next decade. but I believe optimism is a virtue and that europe will pull through and return to where it needs to be within my lifetime
