Nah, I've got a bit of an objection to this. That kind of "damaged and not at the top of their game" character can be genuinely great.
In the more down-to-Earth, take place in our world, movies and stories that they typically function in which allow us a look into their lives without needing to worry about diverting time away from that to show off all kinds of worldbuilding.
The first Rocky, right? Imagine if it was some kind of fucking space boxing where the combatants put on power armor on and everyone made smug quips every two seconds. It'd serve little more purpose than detracting from the core underdog story about a guy down on his luck deciding to risk it all and go the distance.
Down to Earth storytelling requires a down-to-Earth approach, even when you're dealing with something like fantasy or sci-fi, pretty much anyone whose good at it has a steady idea of what the real world fucking looks like. These people don't, they wanna be big and mature and thought provoking but then suddenly it's just a cry for help about how mom and dad treated them and they go on this big fantasy adventure where the resolution was "and mom and dad learn just how wrong they were about me."
