The george rr martin marketing was huge for the game in a time where people were into game of thrones, waiting for his next book or spin off TV series, and wanted a game of thrones game. Elden ring filled in the gap for that.
You fanboys dont really understand just how big a of a deal good marketing + cultural swings can do for a product. Once a cultural swing is in effect you can make any product and make millions. George lucas could have done a 1 man puppet show of star wars for his movie instead of episode 1 and he would have made millions of dollars. How good it is would be irrelevant.
Diablo 3 was the best selling PC game of all time because it was the diablo IP and was advertised daily to millions of people who were using the blizzard ap + massive billboards in major cities talking about the game. The game itself was terrible and had some of the worst player retention of any blizzard game.
