The premise is good, the acting is good. They drop the ball by inserting unneeded outside plot-point/drama/conflict when they story already had plenty of issues baked into it.
It would be like inserting a totally new macguffin into the last act of one of the girl's routes, and having that be the thing that gets resolved at the end.
