The honest truth is that we've hit the peak of what a lock-on melee system can do. It allows for fast gameplay because the player isn't thinking about positioning the same way a non lock-on melee game would make you think about. We've had over 10+ years of souls influence on the genre and there's not much more new ground to break on it.
The solution is to slow things down and explore the non lock-on action games we left behind in the 2000's like Oni. The problem is very few people have actually played those games.
