Because most people are not prepared kill, and have not conditioned themselves to see the press gangs as the enemy. Watch any random self defense video, you'll see the target immediately escalate to lethal kill-or-be-killed force. It doesn't matter if they're fighting with guns, fists, whatever. Now watch any press gang video. It's always the same: hesitant, weak pulling away, always eventually allowing themselves to be pulled into the van. No hard punches, no biting, no eye gouging, no headbutts, nothing. The fighting is performative self delusion. These guys lost the mental battle the moment the stepped outside without lethal weapons. They desperately want to think "It won't be that bad. It won't happen to me. Maybe I'll be sent to some comfy post way behind the lines." Anything to avoid having to face the fight-or-flight reality head on.
