Earthborne doesn't have tactical gameplay, those miniatures and chibis are just positional tokens. They deal with locations in the abstract in this game, so there's an obstacle to traverse that's nearby, and if you move your ranger token onto it then you can perform tests to clear it. So you don't need miniatures at all to play, they're purely cosmetic and could be replaced with acorns or a feather if you're really inclined. You can't do that in a miniatures wargame, it wouldn't really work because you have to measure distances and facing most of the time.
