If I knew nothing about GQX, I would have picked Machu, Shuji, Deux, and Nyaan, in that order, as the main characters. Shuji would be the MC pick, if not for the lack of glint in his eyes (a key indicator in anime of something being wrong with the character).

Instead of using flowery words with carefully picked connotations to set a mood and tell a tale, it uses colors, camera angles, music, designs, and many other techniques. The way characters look is part of that. It informs a lot of how we should initially feel and expect towards a character, and often who/what they are. Key word being initial; it may subvert our expectations later, revealing the first impression to be far from the truth.
