Mobile suit explosions are delayed for dramatic effect, so it doesn't mean much. Gaia's suit took about 2 to 3 seconds for his chest to start deforming and blow. Deux's delay was longer, but that was for more drama. She does have some things going for her. First, her cockpit area did not deform, indicating that she hadn't been incinerated by the Minovsky reactor going haywire, yet. Second, and most importantly, the other explosive deaths left no doubt the cockpit was destroyed, whereas we never see Deux's cockpit blow. Third, she's a kid, and while Gundam isn't afraid to kill off enemy kids, it isn't so edgy as to treat them as expendable villains. It's not treated as a casual thing. The most expendable kid enemies are Ple, but we learn a lot about her through Ple 2. They didn't bother with the other Ples as they all had the same personality, and only became different characters once they were split up.

However, while there is some ambiguity, I lean towards her being dead as Anno doesn't like Zeta or Eva characters, and Deux is the most Zeta and Eva character in GQX. Additionally, Anno's self insert, Challia, needs some kills under his belt to justify is badass credentials. In the end, ambiguous deaths mean you can headcanon anything. Pilots come back from more certain deaths all the time in Gundam.

It's because there's only 12 episodes. It seems like they originally made a draft for 24 episodes, so a ton of content that had to be cut. We don't even see Deux or Comoli in their casual clothes, despite having designs for it. The OP, design documents, and some of the promo material also imply that Comoli and Xavier would become a couple, but they haven't had a single scene together once.

My feelings on the matter as of episode 09 (haven't seen the latest one yet):

Challia dominates the "important" plot (the civil cold war) too much, while Machu has been a wild card who cameos in that plotline. I think this is why Nyaan felt more interesting since her personal plot is tied with the more interesting "important" plot.

Likewise, Challia is a guest character in Machu's more banal plot (seeking freedom, romancing Shuji), though that probably ended last episode. The plot lines have been independent, occasionally crossing over, but only momentarily. Advancing one does not advance the other. This could work in a longer series, but not for a one cour anime.

As much of a cool operator as Challia is, I'm starting to dislike him as he crowds out everyone else whenever he gets involved. Like he annihilated Deux, a mysterious new character I wanted to learn more about, in her badass Psycho Gundam like nothing with his clunky OYW mobile armor, while not letting Xavier and his awesome Gyan get their moments to shine. It also cucked Machu out of a potential fight with the Psycho as well. Gundam vs Psycho Gundam fights are always a highlight, and it sucks that we only got 2 seconds of it (Nyaan running from the psycho). It sends a weird message, as one of UC's themes are of how the older generation fuck things up because they can't let go (of grudges, of power, of traditions, etc.), yet Challia is clearly the best man for the job.

As this goes on, I keep on finding new ways in which Deux and the cybernewtypes were wasted. If the hints from the interview are true, Machu is this universe's Newtype Jesus, and she's barely done anything to earn it. She's not exceptional otherwise, she's fairly privileged, she makes mistake after mistake but miraculously bounces back, and she chose to be a pilot for her crush and thrillseeking. Meanwhile, Deux was whining about how natural Newtypes get everything handed to them, while she had to suffer for her powers. She earned the right to be a newtype by having the willpower to survive. It's the antithesis of Machu and Nyaan.

Second, freedom is a major theme throughout the anime. Machu, for instance, seeks freedom from her boring life and mother's/society's expectation through Shuji and kira-kira. And who is more shackled than a cybernewtype slave soldier?

Then you have all the other minor traits that make Deux resonate with the story. She's a teenage (or younger) pilot, she kira-kiras, drives a Gundam around, etc.

Which version do you prefer? It's interesting how the character art on the official site uses the dead flat eyes, while the anime proper shows her with the innocent eye glint.
