The key difference here is that woman is being cut up by random monsters and Gene was getting cut up by characters the audience is supposed to care for.

You see the same thing in Rick's matrix episode. He gets in the matrix, assaults a man on the street. Cut. Open on Rick putting a little boy into the matrix. Cut.

Just a simple trick to allow characters to do something "bad" without making the audience dislike them.
