I'll just finish this by saying that I just don't get what the point of this story really was, though I won't get into specifics about the ending. I know I'm not the brightest bulb, but this sort of miseryslop is something that I genuinely don't understand who was it made for. It's not accomplishing high literature, it's not comforting anyone, it's not even prescribing virtue. If anything, it's just more original sin if you want to get theological about it. I feel that the only thing this accomplishes is desensitising people to evil, dulling the senses.
