Guns have recoil, muzzle flash, casings flying out, reload animations, bits moving back and forth, damage effects ranging from bursts of blood to outright explosions, etc. There's no reason you couldn't design a magical weapon to be just as satisfying to use, it is magic after all, but for some reason a lot of games tend to make magic not nearly as cool as a handheld machine that spits out lead hundreds of times a minute.
