It depends on how the low self esteem manifests. I have low self esteem but people generally seem to like my company so that kind of elevates me. It is a problem when they're the kind that never try to message you and blame it on "well I have nothing interesting to say" types because they just kind of exist and only reach out if they had a big event happen in their life. Yet it's also a self perpetuating cycle because people get sick of the overly withdrawn friends because it feels like nothing you do matters to them or helps... So eventually they leave and the negative self esteem is reinforced entirely by their inaction rather than any particular action.
TLDR - Having low self esteem isn't inherently bad, letting it run you and those around you into the dirt is, but this is more a fault of the person than of having low self esteem.
