You jest, but between SMW in 1992 and NSMB in 2006, there was no traditional "get to the flag" Mario platformer that wasn't a remake. Mario was doing anything but 2d sidescrolling platforming for nearly a decade and a half.

And then Nintendo went 15 years between Sunshine and Odyssey, having replaced the collect-a-thons with the weird halfway house Galaxy games (which are the best 3D Mario games)
