just have fun with it. You'll never be truly "unique" and that's okay. If you love your character/setting/story and show that, people will take notice. Putting your characters out there for people to see and actively doing things with them are also how you get things like fanart, which I have a significantly large amount of despite my rather lackluster art and animation skills.
