Because unlike trash like crossed, Made in Abyss actually has an interesting setting, a compelling story and cute & fun characters that keep the reader/watcher engaged with the story. Thus when the characters encounter obstacles or are injured etc the tragic events actually carry emotional weight and impact rather than just being cheap shock factor. It also makes them enduring and surviving trough the hardship they face all the more endearing and cathartic.
Simply put, Made in Abyss has soul.
