Maybe people where too used to the original they rejected anything new, I say ICS is an improvement with a caveat, yes is an improvement in quality, but is not and improvement in the specific artstyle the comic had for years but a replacement and replacing things is always a gamble.
There is this 80s anime called Megazone, it came in two parts, the first part had this super of the decade artstyle with people with bright color hair and big eyes, the director purposely changed the artstyle in the sequel because he considered it better both for quality and the tone the story took but fans hated it, they never made the end of the trilogy because people didn't buy enough of the sequel to justify it.
