You've never heard of good vs evil eyes? Eye shape is also a pretty big indicator of innocence or disposition.

Really do love the GV designs, especially the ones in the first two games. For a modern style, there's a lot of variance to them (you don't have the issue where the characters would be impossible to differentiate if you were to shave them and draw them in black and white, like many anime).
