Reducing the glint ("cross"?) to a third or a quarter of the diameter would still make it very obvious if you look in the general direction.

Perhaps their intention is not any longer to make the glint be an indicator for where a shot came from but more of a Sekiro style "warning" before something comes flying in your direction.
Like a visual lock-on indicator that you can react to even if it's on the edge of your screen before he even shot.
