I agree. It's pretty stupid. Not completely absurd, but I think it's anthropologically incorrect to say they are exactly the same thing. The real origin I think is the new Victorian obsession with popular illustration and cuteness. That's the origin of real cartoons after all. They kinda bridged the world of Aesop and whatever into a really modern thing. Although of course popular illustrations of the 1800s and early 1900s were not in it for ERP and masturbation or whatever. We're talking about something that is very broad.
