I think you could have used Bog mummies to represent them since the Westerland and Marianburg are 90% marshland, and the mummification of corpses it's a natural thing that occurs in Fens and Bogs, and even WFRP has an example of them coming to life and attacking people.
But the NotM TK is a more Fun justification.
