Admittedly I haven't read the Byrne story since it was out so maybe I'm misremembering but doesn't the explanation for the field start with him holding the nose a plane? And then later explained as he has to be touching something so he can extend his field over it?

All Star I think he was able to expand his field which is an elseworlds but still
