Doing CDDA-level RP and writing out motivations and goals for each run is how I force myself to do things other than optimally clear what I know to be the best base spots.
>doctor with savior complex
>disgruntled deserter seeking answers, later turned marauder
>beefy goon construction worker finishing a home from an existing partial site
>lifer inmate who just wants to be free and on the move for the rest of his life
>deaf old park ranger stone-to-steel (as much as was possible at the time anyway)
>fry cook completely out of his element and trying to find evac through the airport
>alcoholic cop with a deathwish tries to retake the local PD
Framing your next moves through an outside perspective makes it more dynamic, instead of driving straight to a farmhouse with everything you need or staring at the same inventory items being shifted around for hours and knowing they'll be added to a collection of supplies that is likely never going to be used.

I know a bite is bad news, but Joe Smith thinks his poor buddy might be able to pull through if they give him the rest of their antibiotics. The quarantine is falling, maybe they could slip through and make it over the bridges before they're bombed. I try to mix up the start dates to get varied weather in and turn up zombies sharply over the first week so it bottoms out around the time the radios shut off.

The game shines through more IMO when you have it cut down to shorter chaotic playthroughs ended at climaxes, the map/car/loot randomization keeps it fresher than a long term run and now the zombie spawns as well.

You can think of it as either a way to add variance through self-imposed means, or smurfing as an incompetent newfag in a singleplayer game because winning at it somehow became unstimulating from overuse.
