What's interesting is that having no compassion and believing that listening to the other side is for suckers has historically been the Left's thing. At least since communism came onto the scene. Think of Marx's famous line: "We have no compassion and we ask no compassion from you. When our turn comes, we shall not make excuses for the terror."
Classically it was the Left who could rely on a sense of pity or compassion in the Right to bulldoze them and wipe them out. Happened in France, happened in Russia, almost happened in 1848, almost happened in Spain, happened in China to a lesser degree.
But now if BOTH sides believe empathy is a sucker's game, and that the other side simply isn't worth listening to, how do we avoid flat-out war? It seems to me the Left and the Right are now on a collision course and neither of them is now inclined to blink.
