The pokemon anime is a tragedy to me. We should have seen the end of Ash's story during gen 2 when he beat Gary. But they have him job to a blaziken to hype up the next generation and force him to be the protagonist. They try to salvage it by having the gen 3&4 Ash be more of a veteran trainer type character who trains May and Dawn. At the end of gen 4 even with an army of powerful pokemon at his disposal he still can't win because a legendary spammer shows up at the sinnoh league somehow.

Gen 5 resets his character and is boring. Gen 6 resets his character yet again but is not boring but he still isn't allowed to win. Gen 7 resets his character again making him relearn lesson he already taught other people but somehow this is the Ash that wins a pokemon league championship. Journeys finally gives everyone what they want and he becomes the world champion but bizarrely his final opponent is Leon with his Charizard. Which fucked up to me because the reason Leon is the way he is (being the gen 8 champion with a gen 1 starter as his ace) is because of how popular charizard and a large part of Zards popularity comes from the fact that it was Ash's ace in the original series and first couple movies.
