It's not necessary if you only want to watch it for background context. Maverick is made for a new audience. It fills you in on what you need to know. It's a perfect script, honestly. The ultimate refinement of the Hollywood formula. The first movie is nowhere near as good. If you could only watch one, it should be Maverick. But the first is okay. If you watched it after Maverick you might be disappointed though.
