Lancer is fucking shit. The art is kind of fun to look at, and the mech ideas are cool, but they're also loaded down with stupid abstract shit, way too much rules jargon, and the game basically only has one possible campaign type: the "you go to this new system for a mission and when you land there's some weird disease / nanotech plague / rebel faction that complicates things" and basically rips off the plot of Halo 1. The fact that your characters are constantly lugging around mechs drastically reduces the potential for different kinds of adventures. The non-mech rules are so minimal that you might as well be playing freeform. Even combat when you're not in your mech is retarded. The four stage damage system is kind of retarded even if it's a bit more realistic than a normal hit point pool, it's the kind of shit that Starfinder had almost, and it's dogshit either way. I don't even remember if Lancer had called shots or not, because the rest of the game was so complicated it didn't even matter. Your characters don't even seem to be very independent since I am pretty sure the mechs need fuel. Honestly the lore is so forgettable since most of the tech-related stuff is just "it works because it does because muh 3D printing in communist utopia" (compared to a game like Traveler which gives great in-depth description of its tech and how it works without getting bogged down in autistic detail) and you're not allowed to like any of the non-Union factions anyway, cause they're all fascist n sheeit. What a waste of time. No one even wants to fight for Union because they seem like a bunch of overbearing twats. And you're not allowed to have a plot like Firefly because it's Lost-Cause-ism or whatever and makes you a Confederacy sympathizer. And as I said, the tech has zero depth beyond being wish fulfillment, so it destroys a ton of potential plot ideas right there when you can just 3D print basically anything.
