Depends on the style you're going for, but having an aptitude for art will help a lot.

I'm a programmer, and yet I can make passable low poly crap to work with. Things like texture painting are a little tougher for me, but that's mainly because I've never drawn anything in my life.

If I can do it, you can definitely do it.
