It's not brainless. You just have to hold yourself to a basic standard. Most players, from what I gather, just let their units bump into enemy squads with default tactics until they win, and then heal up any damage or lost stamina with items. But in my view this is like playing Fire Emblem with only armor knights and cavaliers equipped with only bronze swords and lances, and then complaining there's no depth to the gameplay.
Only, if you did this in FE, all you could do is change the weapon, in UO you can customize every detail of a unit, but no one wants to bother actually playing the game on its own terms. It's mental.
