In a devils advocate defense of IS, It's a gacha and their a business. They should ideally, from their perspective, focus somewhat on things that sell.
The issue is there are also hundreds of characters in the franchise, most of the playerbase has likely never played more than half the series, and because everyone has their "literal who" favorite character, everyone is going to get upset at every banner. Don't get me wrong IS is certainly incompetent in a lot of these areas, but people also shit on them a bit unfairly.
They're not going to focus on selling multiple Thracia banners, a game that had an infamously shitty release and was never translated, over the best selling mainline title, just to be fair. It's just not realistic.

I did try No Somniel and failed at 22, but I was planning on playing this time with some friends and was aiming for a challenging run, but not something extremely likely to fail or take eternity. No Somniel's on the docket for another time though.

It's been a long time, so I can't really remember all the details, but I do distinctly remember that Alear struggled immensely as a Wyvern that run without any Somniel boosts, which is what led to my game over. On another attempt, I'd be trying to make them a utility unit instead I think.

I also remember I was using Sniper Etie because I decided early on that I absolutely wanted a strong 20 range Astra Storm as an emergency assist. I also needed a Sniper to deal with chapter 24 since doing the map normally was too risky with the time limit and staking my entire run on Hortensia landing the Entrap without Divine Pulse was stupid. Can't recall how well she actually fared, but she was alive up until the run ended at least.

The others were mostly the standard WK Merrin, MK Chloe, Sage Pandreo as my Corrin abuser, Warrior Panette, and I think I ended up making Ivy my Byleth user because she started falling off when she began having trouble consistently hitting enemies thanks to no Somniel boosts.

It's not brainless. You just have to hold yourself to a basic standard. Most players, from what I gather, just let their units bump into enemy squads with default tactics until they win, and then heal up any damage or lost stamina with items. But in my view this is like playing Fire Emblem with only armor knights and cavaliers equipped with only bronze swords and lances, and then complaining there's no depth to the gameplay.
Only, if you did this in FE, all you could do is change the weapon, in UO you can customize every detail of a unit, but no one wants to bother actually playing the game on its own terms. It's mental.

It's funny because I've never seen any Chrobin give even a slither of a shit about Sumia outside of complaining the forced screentime. To make matters worse they aren't complaining about it Chrom it because Chrom is their husbando but rather because the start of the game pushed Sumia onto Chrom only for her to have zero narrative presence after chapter 11, and it gets worse when they realized that it didn't make any sense for the game to push Sumia at all.

There are different methods, some ultra reliable (but tedious imo) and some reasonably but not perfectly reliable. I usually go the latter type. The way I do it is have Lara open the door, then place a strong unit behind Lara to rescue her, and then have another unit take Lara and drop her in an empty space, far away from the action.

Done properly, that should leave you with a formation where two beefy units are 1 tile away from the door, plugging up the hallway, so that they can only be attacked two (2) times each at most. Usually Leif is one of these units, with his Light Sword or the Fire Sword.
