For Ed, giving up his abilities meant nothing next to giving his brother the life he deserved, the life he took from him. As a family man, i think thats utterly based. You have to remember that Ed is a literal fuckyou super genius prodigy as well, im pretty sure he will be just fine without alchemy.

As he says in the end, he tried to get all the things he wanted using alchemy. Turns out, the only way he could really get them was leaving alchemy behind. Its poetic, really.
