Most people (i.e. normies) who use a computer for personal use just use it to launch their web browser, or for gaming. For just browsing the internet, Linux works perfectly fine. Windows is still ahead of Linux when it comes to games due to support, drivers, etc. but Linux is rapidly catching up in that department. So for the personal use of the average person, Linux is already on par with Windows, maybe even better because of speed, privacy, and security but normalfags don't care about that (even though they should).
Desktop environments and window managers shouldn't be that big of a deal when it comes to getting more normalfags into Linux because on most distros changing the DE isn't hard, someone just needs to make normie-friendly tutorials or some script for getting a different desktop environment. Rather then getting into retarded flamewars over this shit whenever a normalfag asks for Linux recommendations we should just foster the approach of "change it whenever if you don't like it". Literally a non-issue.
On the other hand a bunch of commercial and educational shit still requires Windows which is one of the real hurdles for getting Linux to be used more. The PC user is going to stick to using whatever they learned to use at school and work and it's too much of a risk/investment for companies to switch over to Linux for everything and deal with the drop in productivity while everything gets set up for Linux and everyone is taught how to use it. If Bill Gates AKA Satan never came along then everyone would be using a Linux distro.
