This is a good reminder of our tendency to think of technology as improving in a linear and incremental way, ignoring the reality of diminishing returns, and the potential for radical innovation. Very high capacity mags have existed for a century now, but the focus has instead been on sights and other accessories that make guns easier to hit things with. A cheap red dot on a rifle or pistol improves its performance more than any increase in capacity ever could. Smart optics promise to make targets even easier to hit with just one bullet, rather than having to spray fifty. Advances in cartridge design may make higher volume of fire guns the next big thing, but many have already tried this and failed (see the ACR and similar programs)
