I never commissioned anyone except once years ago, I'm usually the one that draws commissions for people, but I know some people who either got YCHes or outright commissions where they didn't get what they paid for even months/years after the initial payment and seeing that shit infuriates me to no end, especially when the end product is kinda shit, especially if it's for something that I could make in a couple days at least

>No professional artist/illustrator will ever ask you to be paid upfront. Perhaps some fees or guarantee depending of the terms but you should only pay a commission only once you can see the final product.
If you trust the artist and you've already gotten at least a couple pieces from them with little to no problems, I think that's when paying upfront isn't so much of a problem, but generally speaking providing an initial free sketch before fully committing to a commission is good practice so either you or the artist won't have to deal with refunds if you don't like what's being shown to you
