They shot their load with the v2 roster by pretty much using the entire P1/P2 roster there outside of Maskutchi (who was shelved during this time due to the sentai-loving Masktchi existing), Hashizoutchi and the secret characters, and all of the cut v1 humanoid mascot-likes. V3, and by extension, the remake's roster is significantly stranger in comparison since they couldn't pull from the old mascot pool.
I do find it funny seeing Japanese fans online get whiplash when they raise their Tamagotchi perfectly and end up with Decotchi on the remake. The gap moe of a scary looking guy having a nice personality's a lot more charming than generic cute, personally speaking.
