Creatures with 0 toughness die as a state based action. SBAs are checked whenever a player would get priority but do not care about things that happen while a spell is resolving even if those things happen in different instances (eg: modal spells).

If you have a Maro in play and someone casts Wheel of Fortune, even though you discard your hand first and then draw 7 cards, at no point does the Maro die from having 0 toughness.

Now for bonus credit, tell me why Emperor Crocodile does NOT work this way and if I Ephemerate my only other creature I still have to sac it.
