That's why your first though about a psychic card duel is fucking Yugioh, and not the lots of Tarot cards and occultism in western genre media going back to the 19th century, a much more obvious influence for guys like old brit 40k writers.
Nevermind you clearly haven't read all the stories that set up said duel and one of the few things that Abnett did right.
