Isn't that just a trope of age gap romance? One of the characters spends a long time looking at the other as some kind of family figure, until one day they realize their feelings are actually romantic.
I mean, those scenes don't exist in a vacuum, this is the end of the very first chapter. The author definitely isn't going for a mother-son relationship.
