In horses, there can be a system of who does what. I'll explain thoroughbreds (race horses that all the umas are, there's other race horse breeds) real quick.

Owner: Actually bought and owns the horse. Usually rich. Sometimes can have multiple sponosors or owners, especially when the Arabs get involved.
Trainer: Trains the horse and may ride it some of the time for purposes of training. may also be the groom. Almost never rides the horse for races because usually too big.
Jockey/Rider: Actually rides the horse. Ultra manlets. Not uncommon seeing from various countries. Very good at hanging on and not getting themselves killed.
Groom: Takes care of the horse, mostly around them all day. Almost never rides period.

On the lower end of things but still seen in sporting or competition, its very common for the Owner to be the Rider and to have a trainer and nothing else.
