Sonic is aware of the player's existence since the very first game, and there's the whole thing in CD where if Your Taking Too Long, Sonic will just say "I'm outta here" and leave.

You don't really "control" Sonic. Sonic is letting you have control, because ultimately, you're following HIS will.
