Tailsmy is one of those ships that just makes me sad for both characters because it directly implies neither of them had any other or better options.

Let me be absolutely clear. What the writers are doing with Whisper is not only a disservice to her character, it is a disservice to the readers and to the very idea of storytelling itself. We have a character who is perpetually stuck in a cycle of sadness and trauma, and every single issue, it is the same thing. Whisper is sad. Whisper is brooding. Tangle tries to cheer her up. Nothing changes. This is not progress. This is not what character growth looks like. This is stagnation, and it is unacceptable.

Now, what is Whisper’s motivation? She wants justice. She wants to take down the villain, the one who destroyed her life. But let’s be honest with ourselves. SEGA is never going to allow Whisper to take out Eggman, or any main antagonist. That is not going to happen under our current system. So what are the options? She cannot move forward, she cannot have any meaningful victories, and she cannot even have fun or participate in slice of life scenes because the writers keep her locked in this endless trauma loop.

If, by some miracle, she does process her trauma and move on, she just becomes another Tangle. We already have Tangle. We do not need two of them. But at the same time, the company will not let her fade away, because she is on the plushies, she is in the marketing, she is everywhere. So what do we get? The same melodrama, over and over, at the expense of all the other characters who could be getting real development.

This is not how you treat a character or a fanbase. Whisper deserves better. The readers deserve better. And I am once again asking the writers to do the right thing. Give her an arc. Let her change. Let her move forward. Enough is enough. The time for endless sad wolf is over.

The thing that kind of fucks me up is that logically speaking the only way Lanolin's character arc ends is fading into the background and never being brought up again because he character is such a fucking blackhole of spitefulness towards the franchise itself that literally no fun can ever be had with her. She literally exists JUST to drag the entire story down.

She's basically in the exact same spot and problem Whisper is in but worse because at least Whisper is not on a fundamental level directly against what the franchise tries to do, which is to have fun adventures. If any of the hero characters were to dislike or not respect Tails' tinkering and engineering it would be Amy, she has no appreciation of that stuff and would most likely find it nerdy. On top of that Amy is explicitly shown to be an extrovert and a social butterfly meanwhile Tails is shown mostly as a shy and introverted fox with some self-doubt. I can easily see these characters as friends but in terms of any relationship I just don't see how they would work out together at all. Amy is definitely the type of girl who would smell self-doubt in a male and be immediately disgusted by it. Mind you I'm not really insulting either Tails or Amy here, I'm just giving my two cents on the ship.

Wait, does the IDW staff want to evolve Amy into a legit leader who's taken seriously? That's just not who she is at her core, and she should have no expectation of being that. That's just not her niche, that's not her strength, it's painfully disharmonious with her archetype. But this panel makes that even worse. Like they're not just undercutting who Amy really is, they're mainly undercutting Lanolin and everyone that listens to her. There's something about Lanolin, a serious grown woman, treating Amy like some grand commander, that feels primally wrong. Amy's evolved a bit over the years to focus her heart better where it counts, and use her hammer better, but at her core she's still the silly, Sonic-obsessed dreamer we've known since Sonic CD, and she always will be. Her impulsiveness, unstable personality, and passion, define her more than fucking Resistance credentials. And if the IDW staff want to change that, well, they just can't, it's too late, it's stupid to even try. The Amy we've known for decades is already an iconic character. But anyway, Lanolin is discipline and practicality, she's like the exact opposite of what Amy stands for. Her deferring to Amy is a supposed seasoned commander saluting a lovesick pre-teen. The age gap makes it weird enough, but mainly, it's the clash of archetypes. It disrupts the natural hierarchy we expect from a serious character like Lanolin, submitting to someone so immature and emotionally volatile, and that undercuts the entire narratit. But then at the same time, Lanolin has no problem disregarding a serious character like Whisper. The comic makes it clear early on that Whisper's got the skills and experience to back up her authority, yet Lanolin seems to brush her off while elevating Amy, who's still mostly defined by being a silly cartoony little girl who swings a hammer. I don't think they're trying to write Lanolin as an unstable retard with horrible judgement, but that's they keep doing.

Amy isn't the type to 'smell self-doubt in a man and be disgusted by it'. Amy loves helping others, especially to realize their true potential and bring out the best in them. Amy has always been a character who believes in helping others reach their potential, she'd make a lovely wife for Tails because of this. Because she can help him get out of his shell and reach his potential.
Furthermore, in IDW Amy is shown to have an appreciation for technology and goes out of her way to tell Tails that she might not be a genius but she isn't stupid. Amy would have a use and application for Tails' tech going by canon. The idea that Amy is into 'alpha types' (when Sonic himself is not a beacon of traditional masculinity) is not rooted in canon. Furthermore, Tails is supposed to be a character who is confident in himself and his abilities since Adventure 1. The issue is they keep regressing his character for the sake of retreading this arc due to lazy writing and nostalgiapandering.

While it is played up as a joke most of the time, Amy has been shown repeatedly either ignoring or outright being annoyed of Tails not only in Sonic X like the other anon said but also in Boom and in Heroes, I believe she even has a smarmy quip about him in Unleashed that's essentially calling him a gear head. Amy has a heart and is very empathetic but she has been shown multiple times to having her limits in how much empathy she's willing to spare to others.

Again, this might really just be my headcanon more than anything but Amy does not come across as a women who would want to put in a great a mount of trial and effort with a man to help them reach their 'full potential'. She comes across as a women who would chase after men who are pretty much there already. (ie. Sonic, Shadow, maybe even Knuckles on some level.) Tails has potential and I'm pretty sure literally every character in the cast, including Eggman, can acknowledge it but Amy doesn't seem to care to bring that out of him at a personal sacrifice like she's willing to with Sonic.
