Sadly most people who love the childhood friends trope are living vicariously through the fact that they fucked up their own personal friends-into-lovers arc. Tails and Mina probably got together out of practicality in their 30's. Just a "hey we're single and we're not too attached to other people, wanna see where this goes" sorta thing. Maybe the one who rejected it recognized that.
