The Penders era was a little too “out of the box” for my taste. But when Issue #160 came out in 2006, I think it really came into its own, storywise and artistically. The comic has a clear, crisp vision, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the ideas and concepts a big boost. It's been compared to Fleetway, but I think Archie has a far more grounded and closer relationship to the games.

In 2013, Archie released this; the Post Genesis Reboot, their most accomplished endeavor. I think their undisputed masterpiece is the Shattered World Crisis. A storyline so ambitious, most people probably don't pay deeper attention to the story. But they should, because it's not just about the need for a fresh beginning or the complexity of tying the series more closely together. It's also a personal statement about the Sonic brand itself. This is why Amy is so weirdly absent from this arc. Her place was overwritten by Mina, probably due to meddling by Bollers to make his donut steel seem more important.
It makes infinitely more sense to ship the two childhood friends together than the dude with his best friend's ex-girlfriend.

t is rather elementary to notice the narrative parallels between "Sonic SatAM" and "Ocarina of Time". One would hope more people could recognize these fundamental storytelling structures.

In both narratives, a trusted figure orchestrates a coup. Mr. Julian Robotnik was the Minister of War for the Kingdom of Acorn before he overthrew it. Similarly, Mr. Ganondorf feigned allegiance to the King of Hyrule to gain access to the castle and seize power. This betrayal from a position of trust establishes a tyrannical regime in both instances.

Time travel is a pivotal device. Mr. Sonic and Ms. Sally journey to the past in an attempt to prevent Mr. Robotnik's takeover. While they cannot stop the main event, their actions do create a positive ripple by saving Ms. Rosie from roboticization. This is not unlike how Mr. Link's childhood actions directly lead to Mr. Ganondorf's rise, forcing him to correct the past as an adult. As well as traverse through time to manipulate the terrain to his advantage. The past's failures directly shape the dystopian future.

Both worlds fall to ruin because the protagonists were too young to act. Mr. Sonic was a small child during the coup, and Mr. Link was sealed away for seven years while his world crumbled. They are both forced to return as teenagers to fix a world that fell apart during their youth, confronting a villain who has haunted them since childhood.

The royal family dynamics are also strikingly similar. King Acorn is banished to the Void, and the King of Hyrule is removed from power. This forces their daughters, Ms. Sally Acorn and Ms. Zelda, to abandon traditional royal life. They become resourceful, tomboyish leaders, with Ms. Sally leading a rebellion and Ms. Zelda adopting the guise of Sheik.

They want the drama of a resistance but are unwilling to commit to the very characters who made that concept resonate in the first place.
Whether it was direct inspiration or a case of recognizing a solid formula, the parallels are too strong to be a mere coincidence. It simply demonstrates that the foundation of SatAM was far more in line with successful, archetypal storytelling than its detractors would ever admit.

This is pretty close to the pitch version except Ben didn't seem to figure out Nicole's species, but he vaguely referred to her mind as human. Lynx Nicole wouldn't be seen until mid-2000's. The storyboard artist went with Archie's version because it's so iconic and they probably would've used the lynx design if the revival was greenlit and released in the second half of the 2000's.

In SatAM as it released, Nicole is Sally's lifelike handheld computer but her backstory unexplored unlike in Archie. Over the course of the series (especially season 2) her personality starts to become less formal when Sonic is around and she even starts using some of his slang. This was apparently supposed to be foreshadowing her true nature. The revival was going to have Sonic shake Nicole one to many times until she spilled the beans. Nicole would then try to wipe Sonic's mind of the truth like she managed to do when she rebelled against Robotnik, but he'd reject it and tell her he'd keep it a secret and look for a way to get her back into her original body. This subplot would have been successful, but Nicole would be stuck in the body of a child when all of her friends grew up, and then she'd have an emotional reunion with Sally. Though Hurst seemed to imply this might have been temporary or have limitations somehow...
In Archie, Nicole is just straight up artificial, and has no ties to Robotnik, though the reboot coincidentally had a storyline where she was accidentally created through failed digitization.

I think about this a lot for the sake of my project, but part of my thought process was breaking down what "Mickey" even is, which is actually a blend of both Donald and Goofy before becoming the contrast to those two sides. But then I had think about what the "two sides" of Disney or "Yen Sid" would be, only to realize that "Walt Disney" and "Yen Sid" ARE the two sides. The Showman and the Sorcerer. The Showman who welcomes you to these elaborate theme parks, and the Sorcerer who is a genius master of his craft known for the angry looks he'd give to his employees.

So then I started thinking about what two characters across all of fiction best represents each of these two sides, only to be led to Batman and the Joker. Batman is Eggman's 300 IQ, his "Master Plan", his ambition to control the chaos, as he is the Order to Sonic's own Chaos. But beneath the surface, Eggman is chaotic himself. His actions breed destruction, he is a mad clown dressed up like the ringleader to a carnival of his own design. Obsessed with circuses and theme parks with deathtraps for attractions and his own face plastered over everything. That's the Joker.

Therefor, the core of Doctor Eggman is the Batman Who Laughs. Of course, not literally in any 1:1 fashion, this is just examples I'm liking together to paint this picture in my head. But so far, what I've concluded is that Doctor Eggman is a hybrid of Batman & The Joker combined as Order masking Chaos. A "rodent" that's essentially a walking mascot logo, and an agent of chaos... And as Eggman, his natural enemy is a "rodent" that's essentially a walking mascot logo embodying chaos itself.
