Knuckles being the Guardian of the Master Emerald and a World Renowned Treasure Hunter should have been linked together through having a sense of duty towards watching over and gathering the Chaos Emeralds, to keep them at the alter around the Master Emerald like the Hidden Palace. But the Chaos Emeralds are always scattering, ending up in the wrong hands, and Sonic's always at the epicenter of that chaos, so Knuckles' task becomes a very long and complicated quest that never seems to end.
That's all they need to do to justify Knuckles being around in Sonic's adventures and travels without ignoring his duty.

I don't know if you've noticed, but Knuckles is genuinely really clever with the traps and tricks with his island's terrain and on the occasions that Eggman lets him use one of his high-tech vehicles. Despite his physical strength and self-taught nature, he doesn't get a lot of sparring practice with other people, and so he surprisingly isn't actually as good in a one-on-one fight as you'd expect.
Even in AU Sonic Boom where Knuckles is more of a retard-retard instead of a social-retard, he's typically right about a lot of things because he secretly understands the universe's cracked-up toon-logic more than the rest of the crew; he'll say he never learned to read one minute and then play piano perfectly the next (he'd actually pair perfectly with Sticks...).
His social retardedness was always his weakness.

Sonic can actually lose a little bit of Tails' trust if you're reluctant. As opposed to Lost World, where Sonic is the more trusting one (like IDW!). Can argue that Chronicles Eggman was out of commission for a while and there's another threat so circumstances are different, but still.

Just finished Donkey Kong Bananza, really glad I did. Felt nice playing a good game for once.
