Sorry to ask a stupid question about English, but which verb would you use when you want to explain that a political ideology (like nationalism, communism etc.) is on the rise among the people in your country?

>[political ideology] is spreading in this country

I'm asking this because I'd like to improve my English vocabulary, so if you know better or more common or frequently used expressions than the above, please let me know.
