It's not about preference but good writing, more often than not the worst piles of dung come from the happy endings because they sabotage the entire plot to get there, this assuming there was something there to begin with and wasn't a protagonist wank fest from the start.
Only 4 titles in my top 10 have sad endings, the rest are all happy or at the very least bittersweet, I'm not biased towards misery necessarily but it's an absolute breath of fresh air when done correctly.
If you go back to Cyberpunk and have Lucy & David live happily ever after, you ruin the show period, it was simply not meant to be from the start and in retrospect it makes sense when you look at David thinking he was special in regards to cyberuse, it's why I was expecting the show to double down on him being a unicorn that can just scale to infinity without side effects but when those started showing up I was happy cause I knew it won't end good (and hence saving the plot).
Also pretty pathetic to give trigger warnings, it's a show it's not real life and if you get emotional trauma from pixels on a screen you need to be sent to Siberia in a gulag for a few months maybe it'll get fixed (therapy is a meme don't fall for it)
