Well . . . If you want a little secret . . . A real secret it's because God has long abandoned them and so they turned to worship of darker beings who mascarade around as "gods"

God isn't a God or evil being, he is above these common simplistic understandings because life isn't about living its about how you live and die. What you do when given. And entites eat what is generated from those actions empowering dark and light depending on who or what eats and consumes the excess energies created through our actions. No diffrent then the sun and plants. You can see this in old egpytian mythology where they feed and grow in power off worship. Like Sekmet and the eye of Ra; where Ra upon loosing his powers goes to meet with his father (actually God, fun fact if you look up most "pagan gods" they never actually fill the role of the creator generally but the role of "the watchers") who tells him to remove an eye to create a new demi-god to re-force humanity to fear the divine again.
God isn't good or evil, he is beyond good and evil, black and light both come from God and its supposedly our duty to use internal alchemy to turn darkness into light.
But alot of religious men are corrupt and have fallen from favor of God to favor of church and power
