I think VII is the best story ever told, though a little barren in places and it requires some imagination (I see that as a good thing). It feels like humanity's story to me, it's a heavy allegory for the real world. I do not care about the day to day social winds, I hold it dear to my heart.
I like X too, I played em both around the same '01-'02 time period and pref vii despite the graphics.
