Yup, the mech there, Jaguarandi, is a manifestation of a dead kid who's mind merged with the training simulator. It's canon that the first half of the arcade game is said training simulator and if you play poorly, it attacks you.
Jaguarandi is also just an OP version of another mech so you're being attacked by a dead kid piloting his OC.
