The reason you didn't need such help in the era of PS2 games, was because these games were much more limited in the options they give you, so when something was interactable, it was much more obvious. You didn't have as many ways to go (in most cases), and even then Shadow of Colossus literally had a sword that would beam a ray of light to where you need to go. So your example of "we don't need that kinda help" literally has that kinda help. Ocarina of Time as well, noticed that it's easy to get lost on where to go, so Navi annoys you every 30 minutes.
And I'm not so sure about overwhelming majority. I think this is exactly what I was talking about: You see how easy it is for you, you probably don't consider yourself the greatest gamer of all time, so you think it probably must be pretty easy for most people. But trust me: Video game skill goes LOW. I've seen people struggle to run straight on a controller. But still all that being said: I still think a toggle is the best option. There for the ones who need it, able to be turned off for the people who played games before.
